Because baseball and beer go together like Jackie Bradley Jr. and center field, Wachusett Brewing Co. has placed a World Series wager with Los Angeles’ Common Space Brewery. If the Red Sox win, Common Space Brewery has agreed to make and serve a “Beet LA” beer made with beets and donate $500 to the Jimmy Fund. If the Sox lose, Wachusett Brewing Co. has to release a beer called “No Sox Required” and donate $500 to a Los Angeles charity.
Instead of going dog for dog — or, rather, Fenway Frank for Dodger Dog — Massachusetts Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren and California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris apparently have wagered New England clam chowder against Dodger Dogs and LA guacamole.
Kane’s Donuts loves a sports wager about as much as it loves fried desserts. This time around, the area shop has decided that it will send a dozen Boston Creams made with local Taza Chocolate to California’s Sidecar Doughnuts and Coffee should the Dodgers come out on top. If the LA team falls, Sidecar will ship a dozen doughnuts up to Boston. Staff from the shop in the city of the losing team also will have to take a photo in the opposing team’s jerseys.
The bevy of baseball bets extends to the US House of Representatives, thanks to a friendly wager between Rep. Katherine Clark, who represents Massachusetts’s Fifth Congressional District, and Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán of California. The loser will be forced to wear the winner’s jersey in D. C. for a day and provide lunch to the winner’s staff. Should the Sox fall, Clark will have to serve New England clam chowder and lobster rolls.
This juicy World Series wager should be of particular interest to barbecue fans: Chef Tiffani Faison of Sweet Cheeks Q in the Fenway and chef Kevin Bludso of Bludso’s Bar & Que in LA have agreed to a deal in which the loser will go to the winner’s city — dressed in the winning team’s gear — to cook at a charity event of the winner’s choice.
Boston’s City Hall is getting in on the action as well. City Councilor Matt O’Malley has a bet with Los Angeles Councilwoman Nury Martinez, ensuring that more food and beer will make a cross-country trip after the World Series. If LA wins, O’Malley will send a spread from Legal Sea Foods, beer from Turtle Swamp Brewery, and a $100 charitable donation to Martinez’s district. If the Sox win, Martinez will send to Boston some Mission Foods tortillas, meat from Los Tres Hermanos, and beer from MacLeod Ale Brewing Co., along with a $100 donation.
The World Series is often a roller coaster of emotions for fans, so it’s only fitting that two amusement parks are getting in on the action too. Six Flags New England and Six Flags Magic Mountain near LA have made a wager that will result in a temporary name change for one of the two parks’ rides. If the Sox win, the California park will briefly change the name of The New Revolution to The Red Sox Revolution. If the Dodgers win, the New England park will briefly rename its Thunderbolt to Dodgers Thunderbolt. Oh, and the winning team’s flag will fly in the losing team’s park.
