Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley pledged on Tuesday to raise $3 million for Republican Sen. Susan Collins’ 2020 re-election campaign to offset the massive donations raised against her after she voted to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.
“I’m going to help raise $3 million to match that because that criticism is absolutely abominable that they would say that about her for everything that she has stood for in her lifetime related to feminist issues,” Grassley said. “She’s been on the forefront of everything.”
In an effort to sway Collins’ decision, progressive activists have been crowdfunding since August to oust the Maine senator in the event that she voted affirmatively for Kavanaugh’s confirmation. The joint crowdfunding effort by Maine People’s Alliance and Mainers for Accountable Leadership has raised more than $3.6 million. “I consider this quid pro quo fundraising to be the equivalent of an attempt to bribe me to vote against Judge Kavanaugh,” Collins said in September . “If I vote against him, the money is refunded to the donors. If I vote for him, the money is given to my opponent for the 2020 race.”

Collins, who was a key swing vote, came under fire after giving a 45-minute speech explaining her reasoning to vote in favor of Kavanaugh’s confirmation.
“It just goes to show you how narrow the thinking of the opposition to Kavanaugh was that they would say those extremist anti-Collins positions about a person that’s been with them most of the time,” Grassley continued.
