Metro Police fatally shot a man who opened fire on officers this morning after he fled the scene of a traffic accident in the southwest valley, authorities said.
The man, who fired one round from a handgun he had hidden in a nearby bush before police arrived, died at the scene, Capt. Jamie Prosser said.
The incident stemmed from a crash about 7:15 a.m. near Rainbow Boulevard and Gary Avenue, just south of Blue Diamond Road, Prosser said.
Patrol officers suspected one of the drivers was impaired and tried to give him a field sobriety test, but the man refused, Prosser said.
When they tried to take him into custody, he ran into the desert and retrieved the gun, pointing it at the officers and firing a single shot, Prosser said. The officers returned fire, killing the man, she said.
Witnesses later told investigators they saw the man hide something in the bush after the crash, Prosser said. Police determined the item was the gun, she said.
