G uy Bolton’s debut novel, The Pictures (2017), came out not long after the Coen Brothers’ film Hail, Caesar!, and could be described as its evil twin. Both featured a Hollywood fixer trying to solve a mystery while making sure the outcome would not blot the studio’s reputation, but where the movie played the idea for laughs, Bolton proffered jet-black noir as the best way to write about a town that made Sodom and Gomorrah look like the Orkney Islands.
