“Facebook’s Lasso is aimed at teens who want to create and share interesting videos easily”
Facebook is expanding its portfolio of apps with the launch of Lasso, a short-form video app along the lines of TikTok (formerly known as Musical.ly). Aimed at teens, the app allows users to make and share short-format videos using filters and other special effects. And although Lasso is equipped with video-editing tools, it also lets you add text and music to a video. To nobody’s surprise, Lasso has a massive music library, similar to TikTok, and allows users to share the videos on their feed.
Facebook has released the app in the US for both Android and iOS. An announcement for the launch was made by Facebook’s Product Manager Andy Huang, who tweeted, “Lasso, FB’s new short-form video app is now available in the US!”
Users can log into the app using Facebook or Instagram credentials or create a new account. The app will further need to access your profile page, photos and videos. And in order to integrate its various platforms, users will also be allowed to share videos created on Lasso directly onto their Facebook Story. The company is planning similar compatibility with Instagram stories and might release it before the end of this year. There’s no information from Facebook regarding whether Lasso will arrive in other markets, and when. As a matter of fact, the initial launch in the US has itself been a very quiet affair. Regardless interested people in the US can download the app and enjoy its functionalities.
Reports further indicate that the app is already loaded with a good amounts of content in order to keep users engaged. Also since all profiles and videos on Lasso would be public, it might be able to generate more amount of content in a relatively shorter time span. TikTok became a phenomenon of sorts and became a craze among teens and tweens, so it was widely expected that Facebook would launch a similar product sooner or later to gain market share.
