Gayle King presented Legend with an award at the gala at MoMA, where honorees also included Jonah Hill and Ralph Lauren. While a piano was surreptitiously set up for Legend’s performance, King cajoled him to sing a song he composed about his kids’ diapers.
The a cappella ditty about his daughter, Luna, included the lyrics, “Somebody’s got a stinky booty…her name is Luna and she made a poopy.”
(Earlier this year, Legend unveiled the private potty tune as part of a Pampers campaign.)
At the awards, he then brought the house down with some more sophisticated songs, including a cover of the classic, “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”
During Legend’s acceptance speech, he revealed that he and King share a birthday, Dec. 28. “It’s a lonely birthday to have, but every year we call or email each other,” he said of the holiday season date.
