The revamped ‘light theme’ for Windows 10 is first arriving through the preview build 18282, which released today. The new option swaps out the black borders on the desktop view for more white and bright grey colors.
As tech companies start rolling out new « dark modes » to their software, Microsoft is taking a step in the opposite direction; it’s going to add more light.
Microsoft is introducing a new « light theme » for Windows 10 through the preview build 18282, which released today. It swaps out the black borders on the desktop view for more white and bright grey colors.
Windows 10 already includes a light and dark mode. However, the light mode doesn’t change all the colors across the desktop interface, Microsoft said in a blog post about the preview release. For instance, the task bar that sits at the bottom will stay dark.
« We’ve heard feedback asking for a truer separation between the two options, » the company said « Now, if you choose Light under Settings > Personalization > Colors, all system UI will now be light. This includes the taskbar, Start menu, Action Center, touch keyboard, and more. »
However, Microsoft isn’t automatically switching over preview build users over to the new light theme. You’ll have to go into the settings menu to access it. The company also noted that the new theme may not work well with certain icons.
« For example, the OneDrive icon in the notification area (system tray) is white making it hard to see when you are using the light system color. Expect us to refine this experience, » Microsoft added.
To get access to the preview build, you’ll have to register through Microsoft’s website. But be warned; the company’s Windows preview releases can be buggy.
