The Trine series is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Trine 1 is available now and Trine 2 and 3 coming soon. Frozenbyte also announced Trine 4 would be coming to the Switch.
The Trine series is coming to the Nintendo Switch. All three Trine games were announced by developer Frozenbyte Games earlier today, with Trine Enchanted Edition available now for $14.99. The physics-based action platformer series is being ported to the Switch by BlitWorks.
The Trine series has been lauded for its gorgeous visuals and fun, puzzle-based gameplay. The series had sold over 7 million copies by mid-2014, almost a year before Trine 3 released. All three games on the Switch will feature co-op play for up to three players. Co-op can be done locally, with local wireless, or online. Trine Enchanted Edition runs at 1080p and 30 frames per second when docked, and cuts its resolution to 720p in handheld mode. Frozenbyte did not release specifics for the other games in the series. Check out the trailer below.
Trine released in 2009, and garnered praise from critics. The Enchated Edition rebuilt the game in the Trine 2 engine, and added online multiplayer. Trine tells the origin story of the three main characters in the series: Zoya the Thief, Amadeus the Wizard, and Pontius the Knight.
Trine 2: Complete Story will be available soon. Trine 2 released in 2011, introducing online multiplayer and continuing the story of the three characters. An expansion pack called Goblin Menace was released in 2012, and added new levels, story, and new skills. A second content update brought an area called the Dwarven Caverns. Complete Story brings all of these updates and contents under one banner.
Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power is the newest, and most divisive game in the series. Trine 3 brought the series into a fully 3D space for the first time, which increased development costs and hampered the game’s reception. There are some areas of the game that focused on the 2D gameplay of earlier Trine games, but fans felt it was too short and rough around the edges.
The release of the Trine series on Switch is timely, as the company recently revealed Trine 4. Trine 4: The Nightmare Prince was announced in late October for the PS4, Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
