An EW photoshoot showing off the set, costume design and characters for the upcoming live-action remake of Aladdin seriously underwhelmed the internet today.
While it should be noted that the photos are staged specifically for the shoot and don’t quite give us an accurate impression of the film’s aesthetic, so far, the visuals scream “local theatre production” rather than Disney blockbuster.
But Disney’s live-action remakes have, thus far, resembled their theme parks more than fantasy kingdoms. Cinderella, The Nutcracker and Beauty and the Beast all have a strange, “gift shop” vibe to them; an artificial plastic sheen coats their live-action aesthetic, and Aladdin continues the unfortunate trend, with the set accurately capturing the tone of a Middle Eastern-themed restaurant.
