Sen. Chuck Schumer on Sunday reemphasized the position of leading Democrats that the month-long government shutdown must end before they negotiate with President Trump on his border wall.
“That’s why we have three words for the president – open the government,” Schumer, the Senate minority leader, said during a news conference in which he urged support of legislation to protect federal workers. “One day of the shutdown is one day too many.”
During a White House address on Saturday, Trump proposed temporarily shielding “Dreamers,” young immigrants brought to the US illegally by their parents, from deportation in exchange for Democrats approving $5.7 billion for his barrier on the southern border.
Echoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comments that Trump’s deal was a “non-starter,” Schumer said the president cannot use federal workers to advance his aims.
