Senate Fails Bills to End Shutdown With or Without Wall, House Fails to Pay Affected Workers

Senate failed to pass on Jan. 24 either of two bills that aimed to end the partial government shutdown. One bill included $5.7 billion for border wall.
The Senate failed to pass on Jan. 24 either of two bills that aimed to end the partial government shutdown. One bill included $5.7 billion for the construction of the border wall, which President Donald Trump demands be included to let the government reopen. The vote broke down 50 “yays” to 47 “nays,” failing to clear the 60 votes necessary to overcome a filibuster. The other bill excluded the border wall funding, which is what the leaders of Democrat lawmakers demand to let the government reopen. It failed by a vote of 55-44.
Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the chamber, unable to pass funding bills without the support of at least seven Democrats.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives failed, again, to pass a measure to pay federal workers affected by the shutdown.
Two Republicans went against the Trump plan in the Senate, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Mike Lee of Utah.
