An eclectic array of performances including everyone from renowned tenor Plácido Domingo, country star LeAnn Rimes, the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and the Julliard String Quartet will take the stage at the Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts in Orange during its 2019-20 season, announced today, May 23.
The season will feature topic-based performances by artists at the conclusion of their residency, such as Diavolo dance company doing a new work with Orange County veterans. It also will include talks by luminaries such as historian Doris Kearns Goodwin speaking on “Leadership in Turbulent Times,” professor and TV host Henry Louis Gates exploring Reconstruction and the rise of Jim Crow and science writer Matthew Ridley discussing “The Evolution of Everything.”
Here is a chronological look at the season:
Diavolo — Architecture in Motion: The acclaimed Los Angeles dance company will perform “Voyage,” a work inspired by space travel and the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing, and a new piece set on dancers and veterans from Orange County. Sept. 21.
Disney’s Pixar in Concert: An orchestra of professional and Chapman University musicians will perform highlights from such Disney Pixar films as “Cars,” “Monsters, Inc.” and “Finding Nemo” while clips from the movies screen overhead. Sept. 28.
Doris Kearns Goodwin: “Leadership in Turbulent Times”: The presidential historian and Pulitzer Prize-winning author will draw upon her latest bestseller which led to her landmark profiles of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson. Oct. 10.
Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra: The popular ensemble returns to the Musco Center to perform Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade.” Oct. 13.
The Acadmey of St. Marin in the Fields Chamber Octet: This chamber group, selected from London’s world renowned orchestra, will perform works by Brahms, Beamish and Mendelsohn. Oct. 15.
The Second City Touring: The same comedy troupe that launched the careers of everyone from Alan Arkin and Mike Nichols to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler updates some of the company’s greatest hits. Oct. 16.
The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra: The 17-member group, still featuring musicians selected by the late bandleader, will headline a program of Big Band classics.
