The ACLU and the Legal Rights Center called Sunday for the third-degree murder charges against former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin be “immediately amended” and demanded a special prosecutor be appointed in the case.
Calling the current third-degree murder charge “potentially defective” in a statement released Sunday, the groups said they have “grave concerns about the legal sufficiency of the criminal complaint” charging Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, saying it may “allow Chauvin to evade the punishment warranted for his actions.”
The ACLU sent a letter to Gov. Tim Walz, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison demanding that the prosecution of the police who killed George Floyd be taken out of the Hennepin County Attorney’s office and turned over to Ellison.
