The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond rejected the president’s request to dismiss a case brought by the State of Maryland and the District of Columbia regarding his Washington hotel.
A federal appeals court in Virginia ruled on Thursday that a lawsuit accusing President Trump of violating the Constitution by profiting from his Washington hotel can proceed. The decision will most likely lead the Justice Department to ask the Supreme Court to intervene to prevent the plaintiffs from gathering evidence against the president.
“We recognize that the President is no ordinary petitioner, and we accord him great deference as the head of the executive branch,” the decision by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals states.
