Swimming may be banned at city beaches this Memorial Day weekend, but surfers will still be allowed to hit the waves, police officials announced Thursday afternoon.
“The beaches are open but the water is not open for swimming,” said Brooklyn South Assistant Chief Brian Conroy at a press conference at the Abe Stark Sports Center on Surf Avenue in Coney Island. “You can go in ankle deep, wade in the water. Surfers will be allowed into the water.”
Conroy and other police officials held the event to announce the beach rules ahead of Memorial Day Weekend.
He said the NYPD won’t enforce the stay-out-of-the-water rule or social-distancing rules on the beach as both will be the responsibility of the Parks Department.
