Protesters organizing against police brutality were expected back on Detroit’s streets Monday afternoon as city officials put in storage a century-old bust of Christopher Columbus that had sparked controversy and council members delayed action on police technology that has come under sharp criticism.
On the 18th day of protests in Detroit following the death of George Floyd, an African-American man killed when a Minneapolis police officer held him to the ground with his knee on Floyd’s neck, people were expected to gather on the city’s east side before going to the homes of City Council members to argue against facial recognition technology used to identify crime suspects.
