The coronavirus crisis has forced British Airways’ jumbo jets into early retirement.
The airline is grounding its fleet of Boeing 747s four years ahead of schedule because the pandemic has depressed demand for air travel.
“It is sadly another difficult but necessary step as we prepare for a very different future,” British Airways Chairman and CEO Alex Cruz said in a statement Friday.
The airline said it had already started phasing out the 747s and planned to retire the last of them in 2024.
