The film’s portrayal of a heroic group of people hailing from the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda made it a culturally significant event. Besides grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide according to reports, Black Panther became the first Marvel superhero film to be nominated for and win an Academy Award, catapulting Boseman to stardom and making the film’s catchphrase “Wakanda forever” a hit. Following news of Boseman’s death, Twitter flowed with tearful tributes and throwbacks.
