A Newton assisted living facility is celebrating the 104th birthday of a veteran who served in World War II and is likely one of the oldest surviving prisoners of war in Iowa. Robert Clark, a resident of the Park Centre WesleyLife Community, turned 104 on Friday. Clark was born in Colfax on Aug.14,1916. Though Clark, who is hard of hearing, was not able to speak on the phone or meet in person due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a biography shared by activity coordinator Lisa Blommers states that Clark was active in sports in high school. He was captain of his basketball team and also played football. After high school, Clark worked for the Monroe Table and Chair Company and played in a band called the Nite Owls.
