Something special is happening in the sky tonight: The planets Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn will all appear near to each other in a rare triple conjunction. This event occurs as all of the planets are orbiting around the sun at different distances, and occasionally those orbits line up so that multiple planets appear close to each other. This means you can look in one section of the sky and see all three planets close together tonight. This follows the “Great Conjunction” which occurred at the end of December last year, when Jupiter and Saturn appeared closer together than they had in 800 years’ time.
