The Fate Of National Cannabis Rests On Georgia’s Senate Race, Do Georgians Support Legalization?

With Georgians in a power position to determine the fate of the Senate, their views on cannabis legalization may come into play as they cast their ballot in a tight election. A recent poll from Civiqs found that 69% of Georgians think that cannabis use should be legal.
It’s been a successful year for cannabis legislation in the United States. This November voters showed their support for cannabis accessibility by bringing legal cannabis to a number of new states. In Arizona, Montana, New Jersey and South Dakota, voters opted to legalize recreational cannabis use for adults. New laws protecting medical cannabis use were also passed in Mississippi and South Dakota. This means 15 US states now have laws protecting recreational cannabis use, and 36 have laws protecting medical use, despite the fact that cannabis possession is still illegal under federal law. In the midst of these victories, the MORE Act, a new piece of cannabis legislation being considered by Congress, could bring big changes to federal policies on cannabis. But whether the MORE Act makes it into law will depend on whether it is passed by the Senate. Its chances of passing through the Senate depends largely on whether Mitch McConnell and the Republicans maintain majority control, or if the Democrats are able to tip the balance and take control of the Senate. If Democratic candidates win both of the Senate seats up for reelection, in the contentious run-off election in Georgia this week, there is still a chance that the MORE Act could pass.
