Rep. Karen Bass on Sunday said she’s optimistic on the prospects of striking a bipartisan deal on police reform legislation that has passed the House but faces a high hurdle in the Senate. Bass, a California Democrat and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, said in an interview on CNN’s « State of the Union » that Republicans she’s working with on the issue, including Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, « are operating in good faith. » « I am hopeful, because the group of people where we have been having just informal discussions are very sincere, and it’s a bipartisan group, » Bass said. « And I believe that we want to make something happen. » Bass is the sponsor of police reform legislation that passed the House in March on a near-party-line vote. The House-passed bill is named for George Floyd, whose death in Minneapolis police custody last spring sparked national outrage over policy brutality and systemic racism.
