World Immunization Week: Health experts urge people to get vaccinated against life-threatening diseases, including coronavirus

As millions of arms get jabbed with coronavirus vaccine shots, health experts around the world are extolling the virtues of inoculation and urging people to protect themselves and their loved ones not just from COVID-19 but also from a host of other ills.
As millions of arms get jabbed with coronavirus vaccine shots, health experts around the world are extolling the virtues of inoculation and urging people to protect themselves and their loved ones not just from COVID-19 but also from a host of other ills. World Immunization Week, which kicked off on Saturday and runs through Friday, has international health organizations working even harder to convince an occasionally leery public to get vaccinated in general, and from coronavirus in particular. People who have received the coronavirus vaccine and are starting to return to some semblance of pre-pandemic social life — though still with various restrictions related to variants and in deference to those who have not yet gotten a shot — can attest to the week’s theme, “Vaccines bring us closer,” as the World Health Organization said. The WHO and UNICEF are teaming up to urge the world to make sure they and their children get vaccinated not just against coronavirus but also for tuberculosis, hepatitis B, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, pneumococcal diseases such as meningitis and pneumonia, measles, mumps, rubella and rotavirus, among others.
