Osaka, who is the second seed at the French Open, defeated Patricia Maria Tig in the first round Sunday.
Tennis star Naomi Osaka received a $15,000 fine after refusing to speak to the media Sunday following her first-round victory at the French Open. Osaka made headlines last week when she vowed not to conduct interviews or attend press conferences at the tournament in Paris because she believes there is often “no regard” for the mental health of the players. In a statement Sunday, the collective Grand Slam tennis tournaments attributed the fine to Osaka not honoring her “contractual media obligations.” “We individually and collectively have significant resources dedicated to player well-being,” reads the statement.
