For the third time in the competition history two English clubs will contest the final as Manchester City takes on Chelsea.
For the second time in three seasons the Champions League final will be an-all English affair with Manchester City and Chelsea set to meet in Istanbul on May 29 with European soccer’s biggest prize at stake. Goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount earned Chelsea a 2-0 win over Real Madrid on Wednesday, giving the Blues a 3-1 aggregate win following their draw in Madrid last week. Chelsea will contend its first Champions League final since their triumph against Bayern Munich nine years ago. City, meanwhile, secured a spot in the Champions League final for the first time in its history after defeating Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on Tuesday thanks to two goals from Riyad Mahrez. The Algerian had also scored in the first leg, when City won 2-1 in Paris. It means that for the third time in history the Champions League final will be contested by two English clubs. Chelsea’s first appearance in the final ended when they lost on penalties to Premier League rivals Manchester United in 2008. And in 2019 Tottenham Hotspur, making a maiden appearance in the final, lost 2-0 to Liverpool.
