The White House urged private companies Thursday to examine their online networks and prepare for ransomware attacks after a spate of high-profile crises hit gas pipelines, meat-processing firms and hospitals in the U.S. and abroad. A memo to business leaders said the administration is working with allies to shore up defenses, disrupt hacking networks and hold countries accountable if they harbor criminal organizations responsible for ransomware attacks. But it also told the private sector to watch its back. “All organizations must recognize that no company is safe from being targeted by ransomware, regardless of size or location,” the memo said. “But there are immediate steps you can take to protect yourself, as well as your customers and the broader economy.
