Detroit and Grosse Pointe residents who just bought new appliances following last month’s flood are dealing with another nightmare. They flooded again.
Just as they were drying out from the late June monsoons, many basements on Detroit’s east side and in the neighboring Grosse Pointes started flooding again Friday as heavy rains socked the region, devastating residents who have already lost so much. One business got drenched with three feet of water in the while residents saw rain start gushing into their homes and reaching six inches within a few hours, hitting homes in Detroit’s Cornerstone Village, East English Village, Morningside and the Pointes. Many had just emptied their basements, paid for costly sanitation services and even bought new appliances — only to get hit again. « We spent $2800 just a few weeks ago trying to repair damage to our basement… We had just finally gotten it dried out earlier this week. This has all been so frustrating, » said Morningside resident Ellen Mariscal, whose home on Audubon Road flooded again. Mariscal is especially concerned about health issues. « We have a son with asthma, so are very concerned about mold — not to mention the damage this is doing permanently to our foundation and the stability of this old house, ».
