Police said they are treating this as a homicide, but the brothers have not been charged or arrested until they know for sure a crime was committed.
CHICAGO (CBS) — Police in west suburban Lyons are conducting a homicide investigation, after two brothers revealed they buried their mother and sister in their backyard. CBS 2’s Meredith Barack reports authorities are investigating the bizarre claim and whether the brothers face charges. “Mom’s buried in the backyard. We buried my sister in the backyard.” Lyons Police Chief Thomas Herion said despite that admission, there is still a ways to go in this investigation. “This is going to be a long process, the house itself is going to be very, very difficult to handle,” Herion said. “We have search warrants for the backyard, we have search warrants for the house.” Authorities said the brothers had been living in the home, now deemed uninhabitable, without running water, gas and limited electricity for some time. “It was discovered to have a massive amount of hoarding going on, I never saw such deplorable living conditions in my life, and I’ve been doing this a long time,” Herion said.
