Each week the Deseret News collects high school football stats from around the state, with approximately 85% of the coaches submitting their offensive and defensive stats. Here’s a look back at some headliner performances from Week 5 (you can also check out the Deseret News’ complete sortable leaders feature for offense, defense and special teams). Maddux Madsen, American Fork — Completed 28 of 37 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns as the Cavemen dominated Bingham for the 41-13 victory. Jayce Jones, Weber — Kicked two field goals, including a game-winning 50-yarder as time expired as Weber rallied past Syracuse for the 34-32 region victory. Dominic Thornton, Kearns — Played a big role in leading Kearns to the 37-30 win over Herriman as defensively he recorded seven tackles and returned an interception for a touchdown. He also rushed for 29 yards on three carries. Garrett Gifford, Layton — Passed for 393 yards and two touchdowns as Layton improved to 4-1 with an impressive 24-21 victory over Fremont. Josh Peterson, Olympus — Was all over the place in leading Olympus to the 35-28 win over Brighton as he scored a rushing touchdown and then also led the Titans defensively with 11 tackles and one interception. Koy Dixon, Bonneville — Had a sensational game in leading Bonneville to the 56-26 win over Viewmont, which included outscoring the Vikings 28-0 in the fourth quarter.
