Japan’s Princess Mako, a niece of Emperor Naruhito, tied the knot Tuesday with her “priceless” college sweetheart, a commoner named Kei Komuro, giving up her royal status, The Associated Press reports. Acknowledging the controversial nature of their marriage, the Imperial Household Agency noted that a palace official submitted the couple’s marriage document Tuesday morning. Imperial House Law dictates that males royals have household names and are allowed succession, while their female counterparts are only afforded titles. If female imperial members marry commoners, they are required to relinquish their royal status. As Japanese law requires only one surname for each married couple, the majority of Japanese women sacrifice their family names when they marry.
