The movie focuses on a group of high school kids in the 1950s. When a greaser named Danny (John Travolta) falls in love with a transfer student named Sandy (Olvia Newton-John) he attempts to win her over. Their up and down romance leads to plenty of memorable musical numbers, including Newton-John’s performance of the Oscar-nominated song « Hopelessly Devoted to You. »
« Grease » was a critical and box office success when it was released in 1978. The movie holds a « 76% Certified Fresh » score on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. It was even selected for preservation in the US National Film Registry in 2020.
After the movie’s release, Travolta went on to star in films like « Urban Cowboy » and « Pulp Fiction. » Meanwhile, Newton-John found continued success with her music career, including her 1981 double platinum album Physical. Newton-John passed away at the age of 73 on August 8.
