Prosecutors had been considering whether to retry Syed or drop the charges.
Baltimore prosecutors on Tuesday dropped the charges against Adnan Syed, the subject of the popular podcast “Serial” who served more than 20 years in prison before his murder conviction was vacated last month, after another round of DNA testing cleared him, according to a lawyer connected to Syed.
The news comes a week after Lee’s family asked a Maryland Court of Special Appeals to halt legal proceedings in Syed’s case because they argued they were not notified far enough in advance of prosecutors’ plans to vacate Syed’s conviction. Lee’s family also claimed they were not given enough notice to travel to an in-person hearing during which prosecutors announced Syed would be freed. The family told the Sun they were not seeking to “impact Mr. Syed’s release from custody,” but argued that if “the wrong person has been behind bars for 23 years, the Lee family and the rest of the world want to understand what new evidence has led to that conclusion.
