“This is the second time in Powerball history that the jackpot has reached $1 billion, trailing only the world record $1.586 billion jackpot in January of 2016. If hit, the $1 billion jackpot would be the fifth-largest in U.S. lottery history,” the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission said in a release. “The cash option on the prize is an estimated $497.3 million.”
Since August 3, for 38 straight draws, the thrice-weekly jackpot game has gone without a winner, lending it the fifth largest lottery prize in the game’s history, officials said.
At half-a-dozen retailers visited Sunday, clerks reported steady sales of tickets throughout the weekend and since Friday, when no winner was announced and the prize leapt to ten figures.
