Singer Sinéad O’Connor has died at 56 years old.
Sinéad O’Connor, the Irish musician who was the subject of 2022’s Nothing Compares music documentary, has died, The Irish Times reports. She was 56.
An official cause of death has not yet been reported.
O’Connor was known for her popular debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, and her second release, I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, which went on to sell seven million copies and win her a Grammy Award. Perhaps her best known work, though, was her cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which was named the No. 1 world single in 1990 by Billboard, per The Irish Times.
The singer was born Dec. 8, 1966 in Dublin, Ireland, and went on to live with her mother after her parents divorced when she was young. She later told People she suffered abuse from her mom, which she said led to her 2015 breakdown; O’Connor had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, complex post-traumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.
Reflecting on her battles with mental illness and sometimes alarming social media posts from 2015, O’Connor told People in 2021, “I was mental. But I don’t regret those ’embarrassing’ videos. I’m quite proud, in a weird way, that I was that open … The nature of a singer is to be emotionally honest.
