Massive disaster after wildfires in the Hawaiian island of Maui

Fueled by a dry summer and strong winds, the ferocious wildfires, the state’s deadliest natural disaster in decades, killed at least 80 people on the Hawaiian island of Maui in the last week. Many are still missing. Residents hope returning home but in many cases this is not possible. Thousands have no home. The fires nearly wiped out the historic town Lahaina of 13,000 people, a popular tourist spot. 2,170 acres burned. “Our streets are gone, the whole town is gone, our life is gone,” Lahaina resident Chuck Dicker declared to media.
