Denver is benching Russell Wilson in a move that will provide the franchise with financial flexibility in the upcoming offseason.
The Denver Broncos aren’t officially eliminated from playoff contention, though the franchise is making a drastic change with two weeks left in the regular season that could mark the beginning of the end of quarterback Russell Wilson’s time with the organization.
Denver is benching Wilson for the remainder of the 2023 season, according to multiple reports, in a move that will provide the franchise with financial flexibility in the upcoming offseason.
The nine-time Pro Bowler is in his second season with the Broncos after being sent to Denver via a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Next season marks the first year of a five-year, $242.6 million extension signed by Wilson shortly after arriving in the Mile-High City. The 35-year-old is already guaranteed to make $39 million guaranteed in 2024. But he would make an additional $37 million in guaranteed money if he can’t pass a physical by early March. And an injury in either of Denver’s final two games could potentially trigger that guarantee, which NFL Media reports contributed to the franchise’s decision to sit Wilson.
