Steve Lawrence, the Grammy and Emmy Award-winning singer who was also an established actor, died on Thursday in Los Angeles from complications due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was 88.
Lawrence spent decades as one half of the iconic singing duo, Steve and Eydie, opposite his wife Eydie Gormé. She died in 2013 at the age of 84.
The pair made the rounds on talk shows, in night clubs, and on the stages of Las Vegas. They hosted the summer replacement series, The Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gormé Show, in 1958. They won an Emmy in 1979 in the category of Outstanding Comedy-Variety or Music Program for Steve & Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin. And, in the 1980s, they switched to auditoriums and drew large audiences.
