The annual White House Correspondents Dinner was held on Saturday night. The featured celebrity speaker was Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost.
Let’s be clear, the dinner that allows journos to pat themselves on the back for what fine work they do (ahem!) and raises money for journalism majors in college, was mostly a campaign event for President Biden’s re-election this year.
Once upon a time, the dinner was a source of entertainment for political junkies. The celebrity speaker would roast the president and journalists would be mocked for their egos and sense of self-importance. It’s long been dubbed Nerd Prom. I no longer use that term because it’s an insult to nerds.
Colin Jost ended his time entertaining the crowd by paying tribute to his grandfather, a firefighter for 40 years. He died this year at age 95, Jost said. Jost wanted Biden to know that his grandfather voted for him. Grandpa voted for Biden because Biden is « a decent man. »
It could have been a nice story for all listeners but instead, Jost turned it into a form of political endorsement. The audience lapped it up, as did Biden.
That’s the trope that Biden has been the beneficiary of for years. He’s a career politician and historically wrong about almost everything, but he’s a decent man, you know. What a load of malarkey. Biden is a serial liar, a plagiarist, compromised with dictators due to his involvement with the Biden crime family, and he ignored the existence of a grandchild until he could no longer do that. Biden is a ‘devout Catholic’ who is campaigning on abortion without restrictions. He refuses to acknowledge he botched the withdrawal from Afghanistan that resulted in the murder of 13 American military members by a terrorist attack. When the bodies arrived at Dover Air Force Base, Biden looked at his watch as the caskets passed by him. He made a political calculation not to visit East Palestine, Ohio after a devastating train derailment because it is Trump country.
