Vice President Kamala Harris kicked off her presidential run with her campaign raising a record-setting $81 million in its first 24 hours, while she ramped up attacks on former President Donald Trump with an address to staffers Monday that criticized Trump and commended President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race and endorsed Kamala on Sunday.Key Facts

Harris’s $81 million in fundraising outdid any singular day of fundraising conducted by either Biden or Trump’s campaign this year, with the Harris team claiming it’s the largest total ever reported in a 24-hour period for a campaign.

The fundraising will add on to the Biden campaign’s funds, which were turned over to Harris on Sunday and totaled $96 million at the end of June.

Harris introduced herself to Biden’s campaign staff—now her campaign staff—in Wilmington, Delaware on Monday afternoon, giving a speech in which she leaned on her career as a prosecutor to blast Trump: “Predators who abused women, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain,” she said, before adding, “So hear me when I say I know Donald Trump’s type. »

Harris told staffers another Trump presidency would “put Social Security and Medicare” on the chopping block” and that the former president wants “to take our country backward.
