Several top Democratic leaders seen as potential challengers for the party’s presidential nomination came out in support of Vice President Kamala Harris’s candidacy, as the party appeared to rapidly coalesce behind her to become its nominee after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on Sunday.Key Facts
California Gov. Gavin Newsom—who was seen as one of the prime contenders to replace Biden—endorsed long-time ally Harris, saying: “No one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction.”
Another key contender, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, also publicly backed Harris, calling her a “patriot worthy of our support” and urged other members of the party to “quickly unite” behind her and “refocus on winning the presidency.”
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said Americans want a “new generation of leaders to lead us into a future” and added he is “thrilled to support” Harris’ candidacy.
