The former Donald Trump White House chief strategist is due to surrender to authorities on Monday to begin a four-month sentence.
Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene lashed out at Steve Bannon’s looming prison term, describing the events that led up to the former Donald Trump White House chief strategist’s contempt conviction as a « disgrace. »
Greene, a fellow Trump loyalist, made the remarks in a post on X, formally Twitter, on the eve of the Monday deadline by which Bannon must surrender to authorities to start his four-month prison sentence following a court battle lasting almost two years.
Bannon was sentenced to four months in October 2022 after he was found guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to respond to a subpoena issued to him by the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack. Bannon avoided starting his sentence while he fought against his conviction via appeals, arguing that he did not comply with the congressional subpoena on the basis of executive privilege, and that he was merely relying on the advice of his former lawyer.
On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected Bannon’s last ditch appeal to remain out of jail pending his appeal, which was dismissed by lower courts, meaning Bannon must turn himself in by July 1 to start serving his time.
