The biggest surprise of the evening came when Avengers 5 & 6 directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed Downey as Doctor Doom—the next big villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Downey wore Doctor Doom’s mask on-stage and after he took it off he said to the crowd, “Same mask, new task.”
The Russo brothers—who directed four MCU movies including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame—were confirmed as the directors of the next two Avengers movies by Marvel President Kevin Feige, THR reported.
The fifth Avengers movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will be released in May 2026, while the sixth, Avengers: Secret Wars, hits theaters in May 2027.
Marvel also showcased Captain America: Brave New World, The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts at SDCC on Saturday night.
