Republicans are launching an initiative to help Harris among GOP voters ahead of November. Where does she stand now?
Vice President Kamala Harris has energized the Democratic Party with her 2024 campaign, but will her presidential bid draw enough GOP voters from former President Donald Trump? Her team hopes so.
Harris’ campaign launched a new outreach program on Sunday called « Republicans for Harris », an effort to appeal to « the millions of Republican voters who continued to reject the chaos, division, and violence of Donald Trump and his Project 2025 agenda. »
The initiative includes major Trump critics within the GOP, like former Representatives Adam Kinzinger and Liz Cheney, former Trump White House officials Stephanie Grisham and Olivia Troye and dozens of former Republican governors and members of Congress.
The string of Republican endorsements comes as Harris succeeds President Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee, and although enthusiasm has erupted around the vice president’s campaign, it’s unclear if she’ll be able to win the same GOP voters that Biden swayed in 2020.
Early polls show that Biden was a slightly more popular presidential option for Republicans. A Marist College poll conducted between August 1 and 4 found that only 4 percent of GOP voters were planning to back Harris in November.
Biden saw significantly more support from Republicans even after his disastrous debate performance in June, managing to secure 8 percent of GOP support in a Marist College survey between July 9 and 10.
