Following last Monday’s Olympic floor exercise final, there has been a lot of controversy and drama surrounding the results. Today, USA Gymnastics announced that the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has rejected their appeal to reopen the case that had previously determined that Team USA’s Jordan Chiles bronze medal should be returned and awarded to Romania’s Ana Barbosu. Now, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic appeal is expected to go through the Swiss Federal Tribunal process or European Court of Human Rights.
Here’s what’s gone down in the last week:What We Know
Jordan Chiles’ originally scored a 13.666, which put her in fifth place, and it looked like Romania’s Ana Barbosu took the bronze. However, Chiles’ coach Cecile Landi, who knows her skills and difficulty, put in a skill inquiry to the judges following her routine because the difficulty score was a tenth too low. In gymnastics, the judges can either accept or deny the inquiry for the skill in question. The inquiry that was put in for Chiles was for her tour jete full leap. After the judges reviewed the video of her routine, they agreed to give her credit for the skill and bumped her score a tenth higher from 13.666 to 13.766. This allowed her to win the bronze medal.
Romania also appealed Sabrina Voinea’s score because she was deducted one tenth for going out of bounds, but the video replay on television shows that she didn’t.
Romania filed applications against the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) arguing that Team USA’s Jordan Chiles score inquiry was placed too late and that Barbosu should have gotten the bronze.
