Distributed in theaters by the streaming service Mubi, The Substance opened on the big screen on September 20. The official logline for the film reads, “A fading celebrity takes a black-market drug: a cell-replicating substance that temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself.”
Moore stars as the celebrity—former A-list star-turned-aerobics guru Elisabeth Sparkle—while Margaret Qualley plays the younger version of Elisabeth, who goes by Sue.
