After killing four people and severely wounding another person, the gunman took his own life.

In a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams identified the slain police officer as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, who had been working with the New York City Police Department for three and a half years.
One person who was wounded during the shooting remained in critical condition, Adams said.
