The apps ripped off Windscribe’s infrastructure to make some quick cash on ads, but other apps might have more nefarious intentions, a reminder to be careful what you download.
Think twice before downloading a free VPN. One app called “JET VPN” was caught stealing access to VPN servers from Windscribe to run its network.
Windscribe mentioned the “leeching” incident in a warning about free VPNs on the Google Play Store. « Most people aren’t actually aware of how dangerous a crappy free VPN can be,” the Canadian-based VPN provider tweeted on Friday.
Windscribe originally spotted JET VPN making its way up the Play Store charts last month among free apps. After investigating the app, the company ironically discovered JET VPN using Windscribe’s own servers to host its virtual private network.
“People asked how they did this. They stole a Windscribe account and used its authentication to connect to our servers,” the company explained in a tweet, later adding: “(They) just took someone’s account and built a whole VPN app around it using our infrastructure.
