Probe raises tough questions about law enforcement and security at the famed desert festival.
A man found dead in a pool of blood at the climax of the Burning Man festival Saturday was murdered, police fear.
Homicide detectives launched an investigation in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, after a festivalgoer reported finding the body as the festival’s iconic giant effigy blazed at the site, authorities confirmed Sunday. Why It Matters
The homicide investigation underscores the challenges of ensuring safety and law enforcement at one of the world’s most unconventional mass gatherings in a temporary city built to vanish within days.

Pershing County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded around 9:15 p.m. Saturday and found « a single white adult male lying on the ground, obviously deceased », the office said in a statement released Sunday.
The victim’s identity has not yet been confirmed. His body was brought to the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office for further examination. Officials did not release details regarding a possible cause of death or any suspects.

Law enforcement maintained a heavy presence at the festival grounds, 120 miles north of Reno. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office assisted with the investigation, and a perimeter was established around the area where the man was found. « There will be a heavy law enforcement presence until the scene can be released », Pershing County officials said.
