It’s official. The Red Sox will face the Yankees in the American League Wild Card round.
The last time the Red Sox made the postseason, their October run started with a winner-take-all AL Wild Card Game at Fenway Park against the New York Yankees.
It’ll be a best-of-three series instead of a one-game elimination matchup this time, but baseball’s biggest rivals are set to duke it out in the postseason again.
With their 4-3 win over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, the Red Sox locked up the American League’s second Wild Card spot. They will now face the Yankees in the AL Wild Card round, with Game 1 scheduled for Tuesday in New York.
Game 2 will be Wednesday and if necessary Game 3 would be Thursday. All three games will be played at Yankee Stadium starting at 6:08 p.m. on ESPN.
The Yankees beat the Orioles 3-2 in their regular season finale to finish 94-68, but the Blue Jays won their final game as well, knocking off the Rays 13-4 to clinch the franchise’s first AL East championship since 2015.
As a result the Blue Jays earned the AL’s top seed and a bye to the divisional round, forcing the Yankees into the top Wild Card spot.
