Parubiy, 54, was a prominent figure in the pro-European Euromaidan protests in Ukraine in 2013 and 2014 that spelled the end for Kremlin-leaning then-president Viktor Yanukovych and remained a member in the country’s parliament (MP), the Verkhovna Rada.
He served as secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council in 2014, and the speaker of the Verkhovna Rada between 2016 and 2019. He reportedly later joined Ukraine’s territorial defense in 2022.
Ukrainian prosecutors said on Saturday an « unknown man » had fired « several shots » at the politician before fleeing.
